As part of its continuing outreach efforts, SHARCNET is pleased to be one of the sponsors of “MIND THE GAP” to be hosted by the University of Alberta and WestGrid from May 10-14, 2010.

This will be a multidisciplinary workshop bridging the gap between High Performance Computing and the Humanities.

SHARCNET has issued a call for Letters of Intent for Round II of SHARCNET’s Research Support Programmes: Dedicated Programming Support. The deadline for Round II LOI’s is May 31, 2010.

In May 2010, approximately 500 of Canada’s best and brightest high-school age young scientists will be coming to Peterborough, Ontario to participate in Canada’s annual National Science Fair competition. SHARCNET is pleased to be one of the event sponsors.

In challenge there is opportunity, and today’s world has a myriad of challenges/opportunities that can be addressed with science and technology innovation. Science Fairs are the “incubators” for fresh ideas, and an inspiration for many youth to take some important first steps which lead to future careers in science and/or business.

The week long National Fair brings together the winners from regional fairs from across Canada, as well as over 500 judges and representatives from a number of supporting organizations and businesses. The Honorary Chair of the 2010 National Fair is Dr. Roberta Bondar.

Copper™ Combines Cloud and Grid Computing Technologies to Provide Unprecedented Ease-of-Use and Flexibility
TORONTO, April 8, 2010 — GridCentric Inc., a Toronto-based software company, today announced the availability of Copper™, a cluster management system for high-performance computing workloads. As part of its youth outreach efforts, SHARCNET was pleased to be a silver sponsor at the 40th Annual London District Science and Technology Fair. The event drew 186 students with 135 projects, representing 25 schools at this years event.

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) has initiated a mid-term review of Compute Canada and the national platforms (HPC) fund to ensure goals and objectives are being met. The report has now been submitted and can be viewed from the Compute Canada website (www.computecanada.org). A series of town hall meetings will be scheduled at various locations across Canada to seek input from the researcher community on the medium and long-term strategies for Compute Canada.

SHARCNET has issued a call for proposals for Round XII of SHARCNET’s Research Support Programmes: Large Dedicated Resources. The deadline for Round XII is April 30, 2010.

SHARCNET and Compute Canada have partnered to be gold sponsors of ORION’s Summit 2010, taking place April 12-13, 2010 at the MaRS Discovery District in Toronto.

The ORION Summit will be a celebration of achievements, bringing together leading researchers, scientists, educators and innovators to map out what researchers and educators will be able to do in the future, with cutting-edge advanced and collaborative technologies and new and exciting applications and services that will help place Ontario at the global vanguard of the innovation and knowledge-based economy.

Compute Canada and SHARCNET have collaborated with ORION to devote a full plenary session to the topic of HPC. The plenary is designed to show the innovation enabled by HPC and what researchers need to know to get started.

The discussion features a who’s who of HPC in Ontario, with Susan Baldwin, Executive Director, Compute Canada, Dr. Hugh Couchman, Scientific Director of SHARCNET, and Dr. Paul Maxim, Associate Vice-President, Research and Professor of Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University and Chair of the Ontario High Performance Computing Council (OHPCC).

The session will also feature practical examples of how HPC is being used in actual research. Tom Woo, Associate Professor and Assistant Chair, Department of Chemistry, University of Ottawa, is one of the researchers who will illustrate how his research is enabled by high performance computing, and how essential HPC has become to research and discovery. His recent work involves the capture of CO2 to mitigate green house gas emissions. Susan Brown, a digital humanist and Associate Professor in literary and theatre studies at the University of Guelph, will also be presenting her research using HPC.
