NetCDF (Network Common Data Form) is an interface for array-oriented data access and a library that provides an implementation of the interface. The NetCDF library also defines a machine-independent format for representing scientific data. Together, the interface, library, and format support the creation, access, and sharing of scientific data.

Aside: The latest version of NetCDF (netcdf/gcc/4.2) has been compiled with parallel (via netcdf-4) support. A separate Parallel-NetCDF library (pnetcdf/intel/1.2.0) is also installed on SHARCNET. The latter provides another implementation of high-performance parallel I/O while still maintaining file-format compatibility with Unidata’s NetCDF, by making some small changes to the API specified by NetCDF. Note that netcdf-4 and parallel-NetCDF APIs are different from each other, but they both provide full compatibility with the serial NetCDF file format.
