Abstract
The effects of a uniform external magnetic field, h, on the magnetic properties of a pure dipolar planar system on a square lattice have been investigated for both zero and finite temperature, T. From Monte Carlo simulations, the magnetic phase diagram for this system has been determined as a function of both h and $T$ with different lattice sizes. At low temperatures and for low values of h the phase diagram shows an antiferromagnetic (dipolar) phase in which the spins are aligned perpendicular to h. For large values of h the equilibrium phase is ferromagnetic in which the spins are aligned parallel to h. The results also show that the phase boundary separating these two ordered phases appears to be first-order with very weak hysteresis. Moreover, the Monte Carlo results indicate that the phase boundary separating the dipolar antiferromagnetic phase from the paramagnetic phase is second-order.
