The yt project is a Python package for analyzing and visualizing volumetric, multi-resolution astrophysical data. It can be used either interactively from a cluster development node (on orca, saw, kraken), or in a job submitted with sqsub. Even though yt was compiled as a module (default third-party software installation mode on SHARCNET), there is no need to load it, all environment variables and bash functions for yt can be loaded via script.

On centos6 systemsa the script must be loaded as follows.

source /opt/sharcnet/yt/bin/activate

On fedora 23 based visualization workstations and newer do:

 source /usr/local/yt/yt-x86_64/bin/activate

After you finish analysis/visualization, you can unload the yt settings with

Sample calculation

First we initialize yt:

source /opt/sharcnet/yt/bin/activate

Using sample dataset "IsolatedGalaxy_Gravity" (177MB) as an example:

from yt.mods import *
pf = load("IsolatedGalaxy_Gravity/galaxy0030/galaxy0030")
slc = yt.SlicePlot(ds, 'z', 'density')

This should produce an image, galaxy0030_Slice_z_density.png . (You can view it on login/dev nodes using command "display".) Finally exit the yt mode with the bash command:
