WebDAV : Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning

The WebDAV protocol is a framework which allows a user to create, move, and delete documents on a remote server. SHARCNet now provides a https WebDAV instance which can be accessed through a read-only web interface, a third party client, or in the case of unix-like computers by mounting it as a drive.

Using the web interface

Currently, the web interface is read-only. You can view and download files from any of the three directories: /home, /work, or /archive. Writing to these directories or modifying the files in them is currently unavailable. In order to access the web interface enter the following into your browsers search bar, with your login identifier replacing "username". You may be prompted for your login and password. Using a third party application (Windows)

For the purpose of this tutorial we will be using the software package BitKinex. SHARCNET does not make claims of representation, is not affiliated with, endorsed, or in any way associated with BitKinex, and we do not provide support or warranty for the product. You can use any third party WebDAV client with our service. You can download the installer from, note that the Windows 7 version works with Windows 8

After you have downloaded and run the intaller, you will be presented with the 'Connection Type' screen. You will typically choose 'Direct Connection' to continue.

After you have chosen connection type (we chose direct connection for this tutorial) you are presented with the oportunity to throttle the bandwith used by BitKinex; only enable this option if other applications require a large amount of band width. Note, this will not decrease the amount of data transferred, only the speed at which the transfer occurs.

We will choose to configure the data source now (click finish).

In the next step we will specify the location of our WebDAV server. It is of type HTTPS and the address is ''. The port will by default be 443, this is correct, leave it as is.

Next supply your username and password. These are the same as your SHARCNET login and password.

You can choose a description for the data source.

In the next screen we have un-selected the 'browse now' option as we still have to specify a sub-directory. This step may or may not be necessary if you use a non-SHARCNET data source. At this point we click finish.

You will now have this screen which lists your available connections, including

Your sub-directory is the same as your username. To set it, right click on and choose 'Settings'.

Under 'Site Map' you'll be presented with the option to set paths. Type your username (with a backslash) into the text box, and then click 'add' and then click 'ok'.

Now when you double click on you should see something similar to the following. On the right hand side is your local file directory, and on the left hand side is your remote (SHARCNET) file directory. You can now cut/copy/paste or drag/drop files from one to the other. If you make a change to your sharcnet directories from outside of this program, such as on the command line, you will be required to refresh (press F5) in order to see the changes.
