Debugging

Description

This session is presented as a primer for debugging problems with applications in an HPC environment. Hands-on examples illustrating debugging concepts and usage of debugging tools will be presented and worked-through on SHARCNET systems.

Instructor: Hugh Merz, SHARCNET, Laurentian University

Prerequisites: basic familiarity with a high-level language (C/C++/Fortran) as well as compiling and running programs via the SHARCNET command line environment.

Course Outline

  • How to diagnose job failures on SHARCNET systems
  • How to identify and correct common programming bugs
  • The use of gdb for debugging serial programs
  • The use of DDT for debugging parallel programs
