About

SHARCNET Summer School is an annual workshop providing attendees with opportunities to learn and share knowledge and experience in high performance and technical computing on platforms with the latest technologies. The five-day summer school, offering intensive courses on various subjects, will include lectures and computer labs with hands-on exercises on programming distributed and shared memory systems, as well as GPUs.

Since the beginning, SHARCNET annual training workshops have offered intensive courses on various subjects, including programming distributed and shared memory systems, cell systems and GPUs, as well as general programming, for instance, in C/C++, Fortran, Matlab and debugging. Amongst the courses, the main focus has been on programming distributed systems (cluster) with message passing interface (MPI) and programming shared memory systems using multithreads with OpenMP--the industrial standard API--and/or POSIX thread APIs.

The user community of SHARCNET has grown steadily since the start of the consortium. SHARCNET has had over 5,000 users from nearly 1,700 research areas. Each year, new users from different areas start using SHARCNET as a vehicle to a new destination of their research. Summer school attendees, many of them students, postdocs, new faculty and staff members new to high performance computing and SHARCNET, have shown an overwhelming interest in learning the technology and programming skills for parallel computing that would significantly speed up their research.

SHARCNET offers some financial assistance in the form of subsidy to a limited number of students to attend the summer school from distant SHARCNET institutions. This subsidy covers the accommodation in on-campus residence facilities and travel expenses subject to certain conditions. For details please check the registration page or contact the organizers.

SHARCNET has held annual training workshops since 2001. The event moved from fall to summer in 2007, and it was extended to a week-long event with more hands-on sessions. Details on past workshops can be found at the link on the top.
