15.1.1 Overview of the Non-Premixed Approach

The non-premixed modeling approach has been specifically developed for the simulation of turbulent diffusion flames with fast chemistry. For such systems, the method offers many benefits over the eddy-dissipation formulation described in Chapter  14. The non-premixed model allows intermediate (radical) species prediction, dissociation effects, and rigorous turbulence-chemistry coupling. The method is computationally efficient in that it does not require the solution of a large number of species transport equations. When the underlying assumptions are valid, the non-premixed approach is preferred over the eddy-dissipation formulation.
