32.1.17 File/Write/Autosave...

The File/Write/Autosave... menu item opens the Autosave Case/Data panel.

Autosave Case/Data Panel

The Autosave Case/Data panel allows you to specify automatic saving of case and data files at specified intervals during a calculation.

Controls

Autosave Case File Frequency   specifies the frequency with which case files are saved. For steady flows you will specify the frequency in iterations, while for unsteady flows you will specify it in time steps (unless you are using the explicit time stepping formulation, in which case you will specify the frequency in iterations). The default value is set to zero, indicating that no automatic saving is performed.

Autosave Data File Frequency   specifies the frequency with which data files are saved. For steady flows you will specify the frequency in iterations, while for unsteady flows you will specify it in time steps (unless you are using the explicit time stepping formulation, in which case you will specify the frequency in iterations). The default value is set to zero, indicating that no automatic saving is performed.

Overwrite Existing Files   allows you to restrict the number of files saved by FLUENT if you have limited disk space. Enable the Overwrite Existing Files option and enter the appropriate value in the Maximum Number of Each File Type field.

The case and data files are treated separately. For example, if the value of Maximum Number of Each File Type is set to five, FLUENT saves a maximum of five case and five data files, irrespective of the frequency.

Maximum Number of Each File Type   specifies the maximum number of files that can be saved at any instance. If you have constraints on the disk space, you can restrict the number of files to be saved using this field. After saving the specified number of files, FLUENT will overwrite the earliest existing file. The default value for this field is zero which saves all the files.

Append File Name with   allows you to select flow-time or time-step to be appended to the file name. This option is available only for unsteady-state calculations. The default selection is flow-time.

figure

  • When flow-time is selected in the Append File Name with drop-down list, the resulting files saved will be myfile-0.500000.cas and myfile-0.500000.dat, indicating a flow time of 0.5 seconds.

  • When time-step is selected in the Append File Name with drop-down list, the resulting files saved will be myfile-0005.cas and myfile-0005.dat, indicating that the files were saved at the fifth time step.

No. of Decimal Digits in File Name   allows you to specify the number of decimal digits in the file name. This option is available only when flow-time is selected in the Append File Name with drop-down list. The default value for this field is set to 6.

Filename   specifies the root name for the files that are saved. The iteration or time-step number and an appropriate suffix ( .cas or .dat) will be added to the specified root name. If the specified Filename ends in .gz or .Z, appropriate file compression will be performed. (See Section  4.1.5 for details about file compression.)
